BW3 What’s My Job?

We know that gaining life experience and getting prepared for the world of work is about so much more than just what is learned in the classroom.

What’s My Job is a primary school intervention best suited to year 5 or 6 pupils, it is designed to showcase local jobs and to open the pupils’ eyes to the world of work, giving them the chance to meet people who do jobs they may never have heard of.
The format follows the speed dating idea. A class of children will be split into groups (depending on how may volunteers I get). You, as a volunteer will take turns to visit each group, staying for a short period of time and answering questions from the children who try and establish what your job is. When the timer goes you rotate around clockwise moving to the next group

Before the day….
Children be taught about the difference between open and closed questions and how we ask open questions to draw out information. They will make hint cards with some pre-prepared questions on.

How it works….
The volunteers will take it in turns to visit each group and the children will have a few minutes to ask 10 questions to try to establish what you do for your job. If the children are struggling you can use props that will give hints to the children. Each group or child will have a work sheet which will allow them to make notes and guess which number relates to which role. By the end of the session, the children will have met and interviewed all the volunteers, and will have a full work sheet of what they think each volunteer does.

We will ask the children to give feedback on their answers.

At the end, each volunteer will reveal their job title and tell the pupils about their role, how they got into it, and talk about any skills or qualities they need to do their job.
